The Cross of Christ by the Revd Dr John Stott

Considered by some to be Dr John Stott’s best work [and he has published over 50!]. International evangelist J John says of this book: “If you are unclear, uncertain or undecided about the reality and relevance of Jesus Christtoday, then I urge you to read The Cross of Christ.” The book has four main sections and they are: Approaching the cross; The heart of the cross; The achievement of the cross and Living under the cross.

Living the Cross Centred Life by C J Mahaney

A shortish and pithily written book by an American author. The book cover blub states: ‘Mahaney shows you how to centre every day around the life-giving reality of the gospel and how to escape the pitfalls of legalism, condemnation, and feelings-driven faith.’

Cross-examined by Mark Meynell

Meynell is an Oxford graduated who has worked as a pastor and theologian in the north of England, Uganda in Africa and is now based in central London and on the staff of All Souls Langham Place. Like former All Souls staff member, John Stott, Mark meynell gives four sectuons entitled: Cross-examined; Hard to accept, but hard to hide; Messiah:God’s gift and Raised tolife:so live it! Almost the same number of pages as Mahaney by larger on word count, one reviewer comments of this work: ‘Meynell has an enviable ability to take the ancient story and, withoiur twisting or diluting it, bring it to life for the postmodern world.’

The Ordinary Hero [ Living the cross and resurrection ]
by Dr Tim Chester

Chester is concerned that we apply the cross of Christ to our life and living; no dry academic study keeping things at a distance. In particular Chester, who is a church planting pastor in Sheffield, is concerned to point his readers to the less popular aspects of the cross such as suffering and the hiddenness of the Christian life. Short sentences but packing a strong punch with helpful headings and points. Nicely printed by IVP.

Counterfeit Gods by Timothy Keller

Another church planting pastor, this time in Manhattan, New York after years in Virginia. Keller is something of a publishing phenomena with a New York Times bestseller to his credit, The Reason for God. This latest book from the senior pastor of Redeemer Church in Manhattan looks at idolatry in life. Keller challenges human dependance on money, sex and power and points us instead to trusting God.
