What is a church?

  • A church is where people gather. The word church means a “gathering” or “assembly”. God’s plan for the world is to gather a people from every nation around his Son Jesus Christ, to praise and glorify him, and enjoy him forever. When we gather for worship a Sunday, we get a taste of what that will be like. (Revelation 7:13-17).
  • A church is where people grow. Christians are called “disciples”, which means “learners”. So a church is a school where we are taught and learn. We don’t just learn about Christ; we learn him. When we gather together, we do so to learn his word, and encourage each other to stick with Christ and grow more like him. (Matthew 11:27-30, Ephesians 4:19-24).
  • A church is where God lives. God does not live in a home made of bricks and mortar; he lives in a home made up of people. When we gather as Christians, God is with us, and we are with him (Matthew 18:20, 1 Peter 2:5).
